Commissioning of ATLAS with Cosmics and Prospects for Early Physics
Kevin Black , Harvard University
The long awaited LHC will begin operation later in the year and into its first sustained run of proton-proton collisions in 2010. This will allow us to begin exploring the multi TeV scale directly for the first time. The first data taking period will allow us not only to re-establish the Standard Model at ATLAS but also begin the process of searching for direct evidence of new particles beyond it. Among first processes to be observed and understood with our new detector will be those with simple final states involving high momentum leptons. I will review the status and commissioning of the ATLAS detector with cosmic rays, the prospects for first physics measurements, and preparations for searches beyond the Standard Model with simple final states.
